Sunday, 16 October. Afternoon.

After prayers, Mirza hustles me into a tiny, windowless room at the back of the mosque. He sits, looking at me expectantly, phone on the table in front of him again. I’m sitting across from him, and we’re surrounded by an assortment of storage boxes, black packs labelled Atoor’ Ul Madina Classic Fragrances, hand soap, sanitiser, stackable chairs, and towers of rectangular cushions.

‘So, brother?’ he says. ‘Did you get what we asked for?’

I gaze at him calmly. ‘Well, brother. I have some questions of my own. How do I know you are who you say you are?’ I wave at his phone. ‘You obviously have someone listening to us. Is it the security services? Are you trying to trap me?’

His eyes widen and he blurts out, ‘No! Not at all. You must trust me.’

‘Why? You don’t trust me.’

His voice turns placatory. ‘Look at it from our point of view, Kamil. You turn up in this mosque, say you have this magic software. You can understand we must take precautions?’

‘Hang on,’ I say, feigning indignance. ‘You came to me and started asking about my background. I just came here for prayers. I don’t need to be involved in your business, whatever it is.’

He raises his hands. ‘I know, I know. But you said you wanted to help. So help your brothers.’

I pretend to consider this. Then reach across and turn his phone over. It’s dialled into an unknown number. ‘Who’s on the phone?’

He gives it a quick glance.

‘Don’t worry about that. If you have what we need, then all will be made clear.’ He reaches out and grabs my hand. ‘Believe me, brother. I’m not with the authorities. As I said last time, we have the same goal. A peaceful rebirth of a global Muslim nation. And you can help.’

I feign uncertainty for another few seconds then say, reluctantly, ‘If word gets out that I have access to this tech, then at minimum I’ll be sent back to India, but, more likely, I’ll be thrown in jail in the UK for the rest of my life. Do you understand the risk I am taking for you?’

‘Yes, yes. Of course. Thank you. Now show me. What do you have?’

I pull out the transparent A4 folder holding around a dozen sheets of paper that Emily had concealed in an Amazon parcel delivered that morning and hand it to him. I know that if I don’t tell them about Maliha now, I’ll have missed the moment. If it’s a test, I’ll have failed. On the other hand, if they don’t know about our history, it could make things stickier. I decide to risk it.

‘Before you examine it, I should tell you, I know Maliha Ayyub.’

His eyes narrow. Either it wasn’t a test or he’s an excellent actor.

‘Really? Why didn’t you say so before?’

‘I was caught by surprise. She’s a friend of mine from Kolkata and is sympathetic to the Muslim cause. She’s particularly well versed in Kashmiri affairs.’

He gives me an expressionless look, then a slow nod.
